Rory?

Michele momentarily forgot about Gavin's acquaintances as she gazed, dumbfounded, at Rory lounging casually beneath Lucas' left arm. He lazily gripped Lucas' left hand with his own while his right arm snaked around the guy's waist, a slight smirk pulling at the corner of his mouth.

“Oh Lucas.” Ariel drawled, eyes cool. “Given up on the fairer sex already?” she clucked her tongue, and rubbed her hand down over her own ass, tightly clad in shiny black leather pants, “Your loss.”

Lucas grunted, non-phased, and squeezed Rory's shoulder, planting a kiss on his cheek. “If you're the argument in favor of your gender, darlin' – I'll just stick with the cute, sexy boys.” Lucas' gaze flicked to the boy Gavin had addressed as Laney, and back to the girl so quick it was barely noticeable, but Michele caught it. Neither did she miss the shadow of despair darken Laney's eyes.

A slow smile curved Rory's lips as he looked at the girl dryly. “Eat your heart out, sweety.”

Michele's jaw dropped and she swore her eyes did that cartoon bug-out action.

Ariel hissed. “How 'bout I eat your heart out?” she snarled.

“Down, girl.” Lucas murmured, lips twitching. “You're losing your poker face.” His gaze shifted to Laney, and his voice softened. “Hey, Laney. When you gonna dump these losers and come hang with the cool crowd?” Something flickered behind Lucas' eyes then vanished – an unmistakable ache.

The boy just stared at the ground, but Michele noticed a faint tug at the corner of his mouth.

“Hey, fuck you!” one of the other guys snapped sharply.

Lucas chuckled. “Whoa, Quinn, didn't know you were so sweet on me. But,” he squeezed Rory again. “I'm spoken for, sorry about your bad luck.”

“Go to hell, motherfucker.” Quinn muttered.

“Already been.” Lucas smirked. “Didn't much like it. Too sweltering. And the guy who runs the place – total douche bag. But I think he'd like you...I'm sure he'd love to fork you every night.” he chuckled, amused at himself.

Quinn growled and shot daggers from his eyes, but he clammed up.

Michele decided she was liking Lucas more and more.

“Why don't you guys get lost.” Gavin said tightly. He was squeezing Michele's hand hard enough to make her wince, and suspected he didn't realize it. “I have a pleasant date to get back to and,” he glanced at Lucas and Rory. “And apparently so does Lucas.”

Zacharia held up his hands and backed off. “Hey, who are we to get in the way of a hot date,” he shot a skeptical look at Lucas, “or two? Enjoy. We'll...see you around.” That last bit had a note of warning, or perhaps threat, to it and Michele shuddered inwardly. They gave her the creeps.

“Bye, Laney.” Lucas said to the kid, a strain to his voice, when the group turned away. “You take care of yourself.” The kid gave a slight nod and cast one last – longing – look back at Gavin and Lucas, clearly wishing he could stay with them. Michele's heart went out to the boy, he looked so sad, and lost.
